Kent Center School - Principal's Report
Kent Board of Education Meeting - November 5, 2009

Dr. Rima McGeehan

ENROLLMENT: 283

Congratulations to our KCS Scholars: Kori Rimany, Elana Studer, Gillian O’Callaghan, Jeremy Matson, Gina DiGiacomo, Kayleigh Stewart, Emma Hannan, Olivia LaFontan, William Hoadley, Laura Craft, Cassandra Harris, Sam Everett, Cameron Gilson, Joseph Dubray, Keith Harvey, Julia Gawel, Carlos Morales, and Kimberly Rux. All of our scholars have met the criteria of making the honor roll 75% of the quarters from fifth through seventh grade!

I would also like to congratulate Kori Rimany and William Hoadley as recipients of the Litchfield County Superintendent’s Award. We will be celebrating their achievement on November 19, 2009, at the Cornucopia Banquet Hall, in Torrington.

I am very excited to report that the Literacy Volunteers program is up and running strong. We are working with them in implementing an ELL class at Kent Center School for our mothers who wish to learn English. The Literacy Volunteers, under the direction of Catherine Bachrach, meet once a week in our swing room. This year, there are 11 parents in the class, and the Literacy Volunteers continue to look for volunteers for the popular program.

Personal Goal meetings have been completed with teachers and include the following: efforts to improve CMT scores, focus on literacy instruction, the RTI framework,  differentiation of instruction, increasing students’ vocabulary and background knowledge, positive behavior support (including motivation and a positive learning environment), the implementation of a three-year technology plan, multicultural education, and Going Green!

Former principal Ron Viafore was touched with his tribute, as many staff, students, parents, and community members joined him in the dedication of the kindergarten wing in his honor. Patricia Chamberlain, Karren Garrity, Kathleen Robey, and Valerie Vega’s words captured his time here at KCS, and he enjoyed his (cold!) visit to Connecticut.

Grandparents’ Day was once again a success. I have received a lot of positive feedback. A new addition to this year’s event, designed for school-home collaboration, was an interview component. Students learned about their grandparents’ hobbies, jobs, and favorite school subjects as a child. Proud family moments and memories were shared.

Congratulations to Julia Samartini of Arts Alive. She has resigned from the committee, but we all know we can still count on her valuable contributions to the arts at Kent Center School. We wish her the best!
